The filtering can be defined as the process for separating a solid from a liquid, when the mixture is passed through a porous medium.

The main filter media used today are:• Sands (also includes some minerals).• Fabrics (of different materials and different types of tissues, such as warp and weft).• Nets (of different materials and fabrics).

Depending on the type of material is required to remove from a liquid, filter medium will be selected. In this type of operation, it is always necessary to test different materials to determine which type of filter should be used, as well as the size of the space through which the liquid or fluid passes.

In processes where water is included, sand filters or types of minerals are used, which have different size and density characteristics, compared to the type and size of solids present in the water.
