Oil Analysis

ENVIAR EMAIL

As a minimum, an oil analysis should include:

  • a particle count according to ISO4406/2000
  • viscosity measured in centistokes
  • water content in ppm
  • acidity level measured as TAN (Total Acid Number)

All of these factors can influence system reliability and equipment lifetime.Knowing what contamination levels can be expected in a given application -and carrying out a proper interpretation of the oil analysis – is the key to understanding the effects of oil contamination and determining the optimal type of filtration. If the oil additive content is of interest, a spectral analysis should be included. This test is best carried out by the oil suppliers, as they have detailed knowledge of the initial oil additives. It is recommended that tests be performed by an independent laboratory with special knowledge of lubricants.
