Duracorr 300 – Customer Experience
The challenge: A power plant customer uses surge bin hoppers to help feed waste coal into the plant as fuel. The hopper liners experience high wear and restricted flow from the coal fines and high clay content of the coal, and from the coal sticking to the hopper due to moisture. The high volume of dust created in the process is unsafe for employees and causes spontaneous combustion in the ductwork. Therefore, the surge bin hoppers have to be shut down so the liners can be cleaned. This means production and plant downtime.
Initially, the customer was using AR400 surge bin hopper liners that were replaced during their annual plant shutdown. The hopper was cleaned with an air hose 3 to 6 times (30 minutes per time) in a 12-hour shift due to excessive sticking. When the customer replaced their AR400 liners with 304SS (186 BHN max), the number of cleanings dropped to only 1 to 2 times per 12-hour shift. However, the hopper liners had to be replaced after only 6 months because of the low wear resistance.
