Fuel Injector Systems
When holes are drilled into common rails of fuel injector systems, small cracks can develop at the hole edges. These cracks can cause fatigue failures from the repeated pulses of the fuel injector at extremely high pressures (greater than 1000 bar).
Kennametal puts the squeeze on edge cracks and fatigue with abrasive flow machining (AFM) and electrolytic machining (ECM) processes. When Extrude Hone’s special AFM “putty” is run through the holes, cracks are smoothed and the right hole size is maintained for consistent hole tolerance and fuel plume.
