Thixotropic
This is a pyrogenic silica (also known as fumed silica) used to thicken the resin and reduce the drainage, especially in vertical surfaces. In structural applications, the level of thixotropic additives should be the lowest possible in order to maximize the laminate resistance. It is not recommended to use pyrogenic silica in environments containing fluoride, hydrofluoric acid, sodium hydroxide or sodium hypochlorite, as it could reduce the resistance to corrosion. Generally, the resins with these additives are used in applications with roll and spray-up lamination. It is especially recommended for polyester resins.
