It was inevitable that the Affordable Care Act a.k.a. Obamacare would greatly impact the US health insurance industry. Five years in, M&A activity is up, and likely to increase following the June 25 Supreme Court ruling upholding government tax subsidies for buying health insurance. Last week Aetna announced its decision to acquire Humana. If approved, the deal would combine two of the country’s biggest health insurers.

Keith McLoughlin, the American CEO of Swedish multinational Electrolux, believes the company’s $3.3 billion deal to purchase GE’s appliance unit will clear antitrust hurdles and move ahead, despite efforts by the U.S. Department of Justice to block it. The DOJ filed a lawsuit on July 1, arguing the deal will hurt competition in the appliance market. The outcome of the standoff could define McLoughlin’s career.
