Most natural water supplies contain dissolved salts. These ionic impurities can cause problems in cooling and heating systems, steam generation, and manufacturing.

The most common ions present in most of the water include:

• Cations (positively charged): Calcium (Ca) and Magnesium (Mg), which generate hardness, and sodium (Na).

Ion exchange is a rapid and reversible process in which the ions present in the water are replaced by ions in the resin, so that the resin must be regenerated periodically to restore it to the original ionic form.
