Plug-in Hybrid Electric Vehicles
Powered by a combination of a high-voltage rechargeable battery and an internal combustion engine, a Plug-In Hybrid Electric Vehicle (PHEV) provides a longer range electric drive than an Hybrid Electric Vehicle, and delivers more than 40 percent fuel efficiency compared to an internal combustion engine.
The battery powering a PHEV is charged by connecting the vehicle to an external power source – typically a 110 volt or 220 volt supply. The internal combustion engine takes over when needed – eliminating “range anxiety” that drivers associate with electric vehicles.
