In 2013, MCI produced about 21 thousand tonnes of waste, of which about 17% of hazardous waste; consumed 474 thousand tonnes of water as well as 409 thousand giga joule of energy, and emitted 87 thousand tonnes of greenhouse gasses (GHG).
Expressed relatively to business performance, MCI produced about 31 kg of waste per 1000 USD of revenue, of which about 5 kg of hazardous waste: it consumed 715 litre of water and 618 MJ of energy, and it emitted 131 kg of CO2 equivalents. These relative quantities roughly correspond to one tenth of the amount of resources and waste associated with the production of an “average" box (see figure and note). Our aim is to improve environmental performance by reducing these amounts.
The main sources of GHG at MCI were energy uses (over 75% of total emissions in 2013) and the use of solvents in painting (about 23%). The purchase of electricity was the main energy source of GHG (ca. 65% in 2013; indirect emissions), while the combustion of fossil fuels (gas, diesel) for the production of process steam and heating contributed with another 10%.
