For processes such as metallurgical converters which have highly varying conditions, Outotec recommends using an evaporation cooler for the gas if it is not possible to operate a waste heat boiler. If the investment costs for installing a waste heat boiler are too high, one potential alternative involves using an evaporation cooler, which has comparably low investment costs.
In the evaporation cooler, gas is cooled down to a specific temperature above the saturation temperature of the gas by atomizing a defined amount of water into the gas stream, which causes it to completely evaporate. Two fluid nozzles atomize the water into very fine droplets to ensure that the droplets completely evaporate by the time the gas leaves the evaporation cooler. After passing the evaporation cooler, the gas can be further treated in the hot and wet gas cleaning plant.
