The hydraulic dual-flow annular valve (HDFAV) is a reservoir isolation device that controls fluid loss during the installation of the upper completion of a multizone or dual-string completion. This isolation eliminates the need for formation-damaging pills in the upper zone while the upper completion is being run, thereby preventing formation damage. The valve features a large annular flow-through area of approximately 9.2 in2 and can be opened hydraulically, saving rig time.
Multizone completions
In a multizone completion, there are two production flow paths: one through the completion for the lower zone and one through the annular area for the upper zone. The HDFAV isolates the annular flow path during gravel packing and during installation of the upper completion. When the HDFAV is open, the upper zone is produced through the annulus, whereas the bottom zone is produced through the completion inner diameter.
