Wood is the main raw material in pulp and saw mills, representing more than 50% of the total costs. Nevertheless, existing measurement systems such as weight, manual measurement, and Archimedes, among others, have many limitations. These include:

• High level of HUMAN INTERVENTION• SLOW and labor-intensive measurements• Paying by weight implies paying for water and INCREASING TRANSPORT COSTS• Systems based on sampling are NOT REPRESENTATIVE• NO BIOMETRIC INFORMATION of wood received(diameters, lengths, and quality factors)• LOW AUDITING capabilities – risk of fraud and supplier/buyer conflicts• Use of CONVERSION FACTORS implies inaccuracy and high administrative times• UNCERTAINTY regarding inventory levels• Difficult reconciliation between standing and mill volumes
