No longer are the days of carefree lunch breaks, dangling hundreds of feet off the ground.

Considered America’s first Super Highway, the Pennsylvania Turnpike and the contractors that built it, share a long history of hard work, sweat, and vision.

Some of the earliest recorded work on the turnpike where contractors used EFCO forms was in 1950 for the construction of the Susquehanna River Bridge – and again in 2007 for the replacement bridge.

The stone breakers wore eye protection made from steel. This early form of safety glasses was strapped around their head with a piece of leather.
After a toll was paid, an official would turn a pike (a long wooden pole acting as a gate), allowing the traveler to enter the roadway.
The tollhouses collected fares for anything that traveled along the highway. This included pigs, horses, cattle and anything else that created wear and tear on the turnpike.Back in the early days of America’s turnpikes, states like Alabama required each citizen to work 10 days a year maintaining the roads.
