Bulk products of the chemical industry include organic and inorganic precursors and intermediate products as well as polymers, fertilisers and metals. These are mainly produced in continuously operated mono-product plants. The output of such plants is generally more than 100 000 tonnes per year, with a trend towards ever larger production units known as world-scale plants.
