Sparging for safety
Xstrata Mount Isa’s mines form one of the largest underground mining operations in the world – employing 5,700 employees and producing copper, zinc, lead and silver.
During summer, the ambient temperatures at the mines can reach 45°C. This made life particularly uncomfortable for Xstrata’s sparge operators, who would have to wear protective suits for up to five hours at a time. This practice increased the likelihood of heat stroke and stress-related injuries.
Working together for a safer solution
Xstrata approached Orica to provide a safer and more comfortable working environment for their solid cyanide sparging system.
Orica designed, built and installed a completely new, fully-automated mini sparge system that was the first of its kind.
The operators at the mine are now able to control the entire sparge process from an air-conditioned control hut – without the risk of being sprayed. And if a leak ever occurs, the process can be shut down remotely.
