SEEMP gives binding instructions and helps to save energy

Viewed from an energy standpoint, the components of the shipboard mains system are configured for the greatest possible energy requirement of the vessel. This means the mains power generators deliver the highest output when the vessel is fully laden with reefer containers and in tropical waters. The coincidence of these factors in ship operation, however, tends to be the exception.

For many situations, therefore, the shipboard mains system, with its several hundred electrical consumers, is overdesigned and thus offers wide scope for energy saving.

This is how we use the latest technology in the hold:

• Multi-speed ventilator motors that can easily be adjusted to the necessary operating conditions
• Speed-controlled cooling-water pumps
• Unneeded ventilators and pumps are consistently switched off
• Holds, deck and engine stores, service passages and pipe ducts are often brightly lit up – this may look impressive, but is a waste of energy; switching off unneeded lighting, therefore, requires little effort to produce great benefit.
