Fuel Tanks

A high level of safety on board our vessels is a matter of course. Modern technology and qualified personnel ensure that crew and ship travel safely. The safety of the crew has top priority. Nevertheless, accidents can never be ruled out with absolute certainty.

Even when the health and lives of the crew are not at risk, the results of an accident at sea can be grave. In particular, the immediate environment at the scene of the accident is directly threatened – primarily by escaping fuel if the ship’s hull has been ruptured. Hamburg Süd has therefore already introduced inboard protected fuel tanks on all vessels of the “Santa" class. This concept moves the fuel tanks into the ship’s interior. Damage to the ship’s hull now only affects the outside ballast water tanks, eliminating any risk to the environment.
