Modern technology permits economical refrigerated shipments

The number of refrigerated shipments, and thus also the number of refrigerated containers has risen worldwide in recent years. The container’s share in temperature-controlled cargo transported by sea stands at more than 70 per cent and will continue to grow. Among the commodities which Hamburg Süd carries in its reefer containers are meat and poultry, fruit and vegetables, as well as fish and seafood.

Meeting strict quality criteria enjoys top priority for Hamburg Süd, for we aim to deliver only the best refrigerated products to our customers. At the same time, we are continuing to work on optimising the use of cooling energy. In the course of these efforts we will be making a 15 per cent reduction in the energy consumption of the reefer containers in our pool by 2015 – and this figure will even reach 20 per cent in the case of container newbuildings. This, then, demonstrates clearly: quality and environmental awareness need not conflict.
